Read Write Inc Visit

25th January 2023Mr Bennett
Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Read Write Inc Visit – 25.1.23
Dear parents/carers,

At the beginning of the academic year we embarked on a change to overhaul how we taught early reading and phonics. That change was Read Write Inc, a nationally recognised programme used by thousands of schools to teach early reading.

Earlier this week, we were visited by our consultant from Read Write Inc for a development day. She spent time visiting groups, observing our pupils and giving further coaching to staff.

The day was a real success and we are delighted at the feedback she gave, particularly about the quality of our teaching. She told us that ‘teaching is slick’ and she was very impressed by how well the programme is being implemented across Reception and KS1. She said that routines and expectations are well-embedded in every group and it was obvious that both the teaching staff and pupils were enjoying the lessons.

As ever, your children were a real credit to the school and the consultant commented on every child being engaged in each lesson she visited.

Implementing Read Write Inc. this successfully, is down to our reading team of teachers and teaching assistants. Their hard work has enabled the programme to make a successful start and set the foundation for all of our young readers.

My thanks also to Mrs Douglas, who has provided the leadership and coaching to ensure Read Write Inc is a success for all pupils. As a Head Teacher, I am passionate about children being able to read, therefore I will continue to support our staff to deliver for your children.

I look forward to seeing our progress moving forward and thank you for your support during this change.

If you have any questions about Read Write Inc, then we would be happy to chat with you.

Mr Bennett

Head Teacher

They will always greatly receive any donations of household items, clothes and toys and are based at Living Waters Church, Alice Street, Laygate South Shields, NE33 5PB.

Read Write Inc Update

11th October 2022Mr Bennett
Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Read Write Inc Update – 11.10.22
Dear parents/carers,

We have just begun week 2 of teaching using the new Read Write Inc system fully to improve phonics, reading and writing

The 1st home reading books from the scheme should have arrived home. They are copies of the books children are using in school during the week. Therefore, they will know them very well and this is important.

During the parent meetings we explained that it was “Three with me, Four at home.” Children will read their book in school 3 times to build:

  1. Accuracy
  2. Fluency
  3. Comprehension

Then at home

  1. Reading and enjoying. Showing fluency (the ability to read like a story teller with flow).

Therefore, the children shouldn’t be struggling with their books as they apply what they have learnt. They may seem ‘easy’ or ‘not hard enough’, but please don’t say this to your child. Instead, encourage your child to tell you the story out loud; ask them questions about things that happen or what they think about some of the characters in the story. Compliment them on their ability to tell the story rather than just reading the words. Home reading is a chance to show off and celebrate their reading skills. Supplementary books are unseen to the children, but use the same focus phonics as the core teaching text.

As we progress, we are excited to see the positive impact Read Write Inc has on the progress of reading for every child. Making them readers for life armed with the reading skills to support them through their educational journey.

We know parents and carers are very busy people. But if you can find time to read to your child as much as possible, it helps him or her to learn about books and stories. They also learn new words and what they mean. Show that you are interested in reading yourself and talk about reading as a family. We have loved hearing the positive feedback from parents already.

You can find out about good stories to read to your child here: https://www.facebook.com/miskin.education

Further Information, Handouts and Resources can be found at: https://mortimerprimary.co.uk/phonics-at-mortimer-primary-school/

Thank you for your continuing support
