Y4 Ancient Greece Day 2021

20th July 2021A Stelling

What a day Y4 had yesterday to bring their topic on Ancient Greece to an end!

Lessons using the Greek Alphabet and Greek Numbers marked the start of the day. Followed by a history of the Greek Olympics and a little bit of research about the coming Modern Olympics starting this week!

The children enjoyed perfecting the skill of discus throwing, javelin and chariot racing – all with a little modern twist.

After all this hard work it was time for a Greek feast! Many of the children tried lots of different delicacies and couldn’t wait to come back for seconds.

This was an absolutely brilliant day, made even better by the effort of the costumes being worn! Well done to all the mums, dads and grown-ups who helped to robe the children. It really did make the day.

We hope you enjoy the photos.

Y4KA Art Exhibition 2021

19th July 2021A Stelling
Way back in October Y4KA had the privilege to work with a fantastic artist. Jane McCracken enjoys working with different mediums and introduced the children to using coloured pens to create their artwork. After overcoming their initial hesitancy, with a lot of encouragement from Jane, of not being able to rub out mistakes, the children did a fantastic job of creating their works of art.
Jane had teamed up with the Born Free Foundation and the Great North Museum (Hancock) to raise awareness of the real threat a lot of animals around the world have of becoming extinct, by creating an exhibition of children’s artwork.
Schools from across the North East and around the world have taken part and now the exhibition is ready at the museum to be viewed.
Excitement does not fully describe how our children were feeling last week when they finally got the chance to not only meet Jane in person for the first time, the art class had been done via zoom, but to see their own piece of artwork on the walls at the Hancock.
The exhibition is open to be viewed across the summer holidays and it would be fabulous for as many of our families as possible could visit the museum to view it.

Step 4 Information

16th July 2021Mr Bennett
Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Step 4 Information – 16.7.21
Our response to the removal of restrictions and the impact on the final week of term.

The government have identified Monday 19th July as the date to remove many restrictions that have been imposed on the UK population.

Our aim is to make things as easy and as safe as we can prior to the school summer holidays. We have consulted with the Local Authority over the forthcoming changes and the impact on our school for the final week of term. Please see the attached official letter from South Tyneside Council. In effect, our procedures will not change for the final week.

Parents should note:

  • Timings for the start and end of school will remain the same.
  • Year groups will still act as bubbles for the final week of term.
  • Isolation requests issued prior to the 19th July will still apply.
  • KS1 parents should still collect their children using the box system.
  • We continue to ask parents to respect each other’s space and wear face masks whilst on site.
  • Staff will continue to social distance within school.

Our aim is to ensure that pupils and staff reach the summer holidays safely.

Plans on how we will reopen in September are well underway and we will communicate these to parents when ready.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Digging for Victory

16th July 2021A Stelling

Our Year 5 gardening monitors have cared for our vegetable garden all term and today Mrs Mackay encountered four Year 6 evacuees who needed to be put to work.

The evacuees worked hard digging up the much needed veg for the war effort and were astonished at what Year 5 had grown. Mrs Cunningham (owner of the land) also pitched in and has taken the crop to be made into some stew.
A huge thank you to the Year 5 monitors for their care and diligence this term and of course to the evacuees who worked in hot conditions digging for victory!

Friends of the Readhead Park: Y4 Bird Box Update

13th July 2021A Stelling

This morning our Y4 pupils delivered their hand made bird boxes to the Friends of the Readhead Park and South Tyneside Council, who will now place them on designated trees around the park. A tree specialist has conducted a survey to say where the boxes would be best situated.

All materials were supplied by the Friends of the Readhead Park and, along with the 26 created for the park, we now have a  number of boxes to be placed around our own outside area too.

This project enriched the pupils’ science curriculum about habitats and many of the children have said this was one of their favourite activities of the year.

The children discovered an area of the park that is ear-marked to become a habitat area for minibeasts and other creatures. Year 4 will now be creating plans and designs which they will send to the developers.

All our bird boxes have a number in “Mortimer Blue” underneath them, can you find all 26?

Tuesday 13th July for Action Medical Research for children (the Paddington Bear charity)

Parents can make a donation via Parent Pay whilst children bring a drink of juice and a snack to have a picnic with their class and bear.

By taking part in Bring your Bear, children have a chance to help other children giving them a great sense of achievement.

The money you raise will help thousands of sick babies and children in the UK who are suffering from a whole range of illnesses, from conditions like epilepsy, asthma, cerebral palsy to rare incurable diseases. Take a look at the pioneering research we fund thanks to your help.

Children will bring home their end of year reports on Friday 16th July. If you have any queries or questions before or after, this please speak to your child’s class teacher. Staff are always willing to make time to discuss your child.

Come on England!

9th July 2021Mr Bennett
Come on England!

On Sunday England take on Italy in the Euro 2020 Final! If your child will be watching, then it’s going to be a late night for them.

Hopefully, we will be able to celebrate on Monday (12.7.21), so children can wear red and white, if they wish, in school (win or lose!). We will even allow football tops…just this once!

Also, to help, we are offering parents a choice on Monday.

  • School will be open at the normal time so nothing needs to change with your routine.

or

  • Parents can let children sleep in and then bring their child into school between 10:15-10:30. They will still receive their mark. They should enter through their normal school gate.
Hopefully this will stop any early morning grumps and children still come to school!

After 55 years since England reached a major football final and 18 months of pandemic, let’s get on board the feel good atmosphere. But let’s educate as well: why do we sing the national anthem, the importance of team work and resilience, how it feels to win and how we behave if we lose! It’s not just a football game.

Have a great weekend and come on England!

ACT Prevent

8th July 2021Mr Bennett

The Northumbria Police Prevent Team have a simple request for your help as we approach the long summer break.

Attached is a digital leaflet designed specifically for parents, guardians, family and friends. Northumbria Police are using it to encourage the public to access information about Prevent via various pathways including ACT EARLY

https://actearly.uk/ .

ACT EARLY is a website designed for the public, to inform and encourage them to make Prevent referrals if they have worries about their children, family or friends.

Northumbria Police are seeing a rise in Prevent referrals, particularly from schools, which is a positive thing as it means more professionals are recognising this crucial safeguarding concern and therefore more young vulnerable people are being diverted into positive pathways.

Northumbria Police are really keen to encourage parents, guardians etc. to learn about Prevent and to feel empowered to make referrals themselves.

Northumbria Police wish to spread the word so everyone can look out for the concerns that could signal a potentially dangerous pathway and therefore safeguard our young people.
