Year 6 have been investigating bridges this week. They began the week by looking at bridge structures and exploring their features. They then created a range of different-shaped beams which they tested to find out which could hold the most weight. The children used their knowledge of trusses to improve their bridge designs and increase their sturdiness. Year 6 have had an amazing week of investigating, designing and modelling and we are very impressed with their final products.
We brought our STEM week to a close with a fantastic whole school showcase of all the work that has been going on in and around school this week.
Our children have thoroughly enjoyed this creative week and it was evident from their explanations during the assembly how much knowledge they have gained from this week.
Year 5 have worked in groups this week to make carousels! They designed their merry-go-rounds then made the circuit that would make it move. They used a range of equipment such as hacksaws, vices and secateurs to make the frame. Finally, they personalised their carousels with their own designs. The finished products are fantastic and all fit the brief of moving in a circular motion. Some groups experimented further with changing the speed and direction. Well done!
Our STEM Week kicked off with a bang!
Well done Daniel Clements for the achievement of “Rockstar Of The Week!”
Daniel achieved Rock Hero status this week, which means he answers questions in less than one second. An amazing achievement, well done!
This week in school we have been celebrating Safer Internet Day 2020 through a number of assemblies, lessons in class and shared story times.
We hope your children have came home and discussed these very important lessons with you. These sessions are always delivered at age appropriate levels and we are always impressed by how mature our pupils respond to this topic, which effects every aspect of their day-to-day life.
Please remember we have an open door policy for any queries, worries or concerns about digital devices, websites, social media and app usage. We are here to support and help you and your family.
We will be accepting our delivery of trees shortly after half term and a date will be set for planting them. The children involved in this project will be donning their wellies and along with a parent/carer will aim to transform an area of the turning circle into our Mortimer Woodland! Mrs Mackay has also managed to secure another delivery of sapings in November taking our total up to 45 trees. We look forward to seeing our ‘woodland’ grow.
Year 5 had a fantastic day at Sunderland University. They were given a full campus tour and designed their ‘dream university’. They learnt about friction to build rockets. These were then tested for speed. They participated in an interactive presentation called ‘Degree or no Degree’, finding out which careers need a degree and which don’t. They also had the opportunity to explore their own career aspirations.
Well done Summer Chester for the most improved time. You are our Times Table Rockstar for the week ending Friday 31st January.
Reception children have thoroughly enjoyed their sessions learning about road safety.
