MORTIMER PRIMARY CHOIR  2015 – 2016

By A Ogilvie30th June 2016

Our wonderful choir has just come to the end of what has been a very busy, but extremely enjoyable year.

Autumn Term always finds us rehearsing Christmas music before we know it and we had a super time taking ourselves out into the community to share a little Christmas Spirit with others. Once again we sang for the ‘Tea and Chat group’ who meet at Westoe Methodists,  Marsden’s ‘Friendly Circle’ plus a new adventure – a performance at Hillhead Tearooms (followed by delicious doughnuts and juice!).

We also performed alongside South Tyneside’s Senior Wind Band at the Rotary Carol Service in St Hilda’s Church.

Spring Term introduced us to an amazing charity ‘Daft as a Brush’, a brilliant group of people who provide support in the form of dedicated transport for cancer patients. We sang at the launch of their ‘River Tyne Trail’ in April, joining Toner Avenue Choir to sing ‘Water of Tyne’ at South Shields Pier.

Summer Term saw us return to the wonderful acoustics of St Michael’s Church, Westoe, where we joined with Bede Wind Band in a lovely evening of music on June 24th. We discovered a few potential conductors hiding in our ranks too!

Our summer concert also means a final performance for our Year 6 members and we would like to say a very big thank to them for their continuous dedication over the last four years. Good luck and keep on singing!

The children have worked enthusiastically all year, producing one of the best sounds we have heard in several years. Without the fantastic support we receive from Mr Powell and Mrs Taylor each week we wouldn’t be able to do as much as we do and we would like to say thank you very much to them both.

Here’s to another fabulous year next year!

RATS! Information for Y5/6 Parents

17th June 2016A Ogilvie

As you already know from the newsletter, our Y5/6 children will be presenting a musical version of the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin as their end of year show. there will be two performances of ‘Rats!’, Monday 4th July and Tuesday 5th July, both starting at 6:30pm and lasting approximately an hour.

All children will be offered two tickets, priced £1 each and these will be issued at either both for the same performance, or one for each night. We will keep a list of requests for extra tickets, should any become available once everyone has had the chance to take up their allocation. Tickets will be on sale from next week, please send money to your child’s teacher, not the school office.

Please note that we respectfully ask that the children attend BOTH performances, as I am sure you realise that the success of the show depends on the a high level of attendance. For past productions we have always found that clubs and groups are very helpful releasing children from attending as a one off, once they know it is for a school commitment. We would be very grateful if you could try to ensure your children are with us on both evenings.

Our Y5/6 children have a very important role to play as the chorus of ‘Rats!’ and we would like to invite them to dress in ‘punk attire’ for the two performance. We do not expect parents to buy new clothes for the show; this is a perfect opportunity to upcycle old clothes.

We have discussed ideas with the children at school but here are a few examples: –

  • Any jeans, jeggings or leggings
  • White or black t-shirt: you may wish to rip t-shirts, layer vest tops or add studs, safety pins etc to customise your top. You could also write on t-shirts with fabric pens or markers words such as ‘Rats Rule!’
  • You may have old pair of braces sot wear over the t-shirts
  • Dark wrist bands, choker necklaces and stud ear-rings. Please don’t wear dangly or hooped earrings for health and safety reasons.
  • Children may wish to spray, colour or back comb their hair. (We won’t request that the children wash any colours out of their hair for school on Tuesday – unless they wish to of course.)
  • Please remember the hall will be very warm so dress accordingly, these are only suggestions and not a necessity.

Have fun designing your costume, we do not want this to be extra work or extra cost to parents!

Children have been asked to arrive at 6:15pm each night, dressed ready for the performance. We anticipate finishing at approximately 7:30 pm and ask that all children go home with an adult after the performance.

Thank you very much, we look forward to seeing you on July 4th or 5th.
