Sport’s Round Up

11th July 2022A Stelling

The children in Year 5 and 6 have taken part in two cricket competitions. One was mixed teams and the other was a girls only event. The children were excellent representatives and did very well. The girls did very well coming second in their event.

In addition our Year 5 children have all recently completed climbing at Simonside which they thoroughly enjoyed. Also some of them represented their school at a super Orienteering event at South Marine Park. Although we were not winners the children had a lovely afternoon and also enjoyed the glorious weather.

First Aid Training

11th July 2022A Stelling

All of our Year 5 have recently completed an excellent morning learning about basic first aid. This included bandages, placing each other in the recovery position and  CPR. The children were then shown how to dissect a lamb’s heart before doing it themselves. The sessions support the statutory requirement that children learn about First Aid through our PSHE programme of study and are delivered through the Tumbles and Grumbles organisation.

Sun Cream Update – 10.7.22
Dear parents/carers,

Following further information becoming available, we wish to update you on sun cream use in school.

  • Pupils are permitted to bring in a roll on sun cream for personal use.
  • This should be clearly named and kept in the pupils’ bag.
  • Pupils are not to share their sun cream.
  • We ask that pupils are shown at home how to correctly apply their roll on.
  • This is especially important with the eye area.
  • Pupils can apply at lunch time and will need to do this themselves.

We have had positive feedback regarding the Soltan Kids Protect & Moisterise Suncare rollon SPF50+, which is available from Boots. We ask that parents watch for the ingredient Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil which is almond oil and is found in some products such as Nivea.

We also highly recommend that pupils bring and wear a suitable sun hat when outside and drink water throughout the day.

Winners! – 1.7.22
Dear all,
We are delighted to announce that Mrs Miller’s lunchtime groups have been working very hard on the PLAS-tastic ‘Keep Our Sea Plastic Free’ display outside of the hall.
The display was entered into a Sea Life Sea Savers competition to promote the reduction of plastic pollution and won first place!
As our prize, we have now adopted two green sea turtles – Lulu & Gulliver who are around 83 years old. They live at the Sea Life Centre in Brighton. They are originally from America and came via London Zoo. Lulu weighs an incredible 28 stone and they both love eating broccoli and leeks!
A huge thank you to everyone who donated bottle tops and to Mrs Miller and her group! Great work everyone!

Y3/4 Cricket Triumph!

30th June 2022A Stelling

Well done to 16 of our year 3 and 4 pupils, who represented our school at the South Tyneside School Sport Network Y3/4 Countdown Cricket Festival 2022.

We took a Y3 team and a Y4 team, both were very strong on the day!

The Y3 team won three out of four of their matches. Y4 won all four of their matches.

The overall winner for the tournament was our Y4 team with a huge 394 runs over the four matches on the day.

Lots of talented cricketers in both teams, who we hope may go on to represent our school in years to come. As always our pupils were fantastic ambassadors for our school and displayed fantastic sportsmanship and manners.

Well done!

Dear all,
The term is quickly disappearing and July is just around the corner!
Check out what’s been happening and the come back of the Funerama!
Thanks
Mrs Grant and Mr Mackay It is with much sadness (but happiness for them) we announce the retirement of two long standing members of the Mortimer teaching team.

At the end of term, we will say our final good byes to Mrs Grant (3JG) and Mr Mackay (5PM).

By the time we close for the summer holidays, Mr Mackay will have worked at Mortimer for 27 years and nearly 7 months. Mrs Grant, has been teaching at Mortimer for 33 years and nearly 11 months! Both amazing servants to the school and the pupils that have been in their classrooms!

We are sure that you join us in wishing them the very best health and happiness in their retirement plans.

Therefore, we get to say congratulations to Miss Bone and Mrs Gibson as they take up teaching positions with us from September. Welcome to Mortimer!

Fire serviceWe had a special visitor in school on Friday. Firefighter Little from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service delivered a talk to our Key Stage 2 pupils on the topic of fire safety and associated implications of anti-social behaviour.

This was an excellent opportunity which informed our pupils of how they could keep themselves and others safe in and around the home, especially as the summer break approaches.

Keeping our pupils safe, in school and in the wider community, is always our top priority. As discussed in our session today, if you are concerned about anti-social behaviour you can report it anonymously. The Fire Service can also keep you and your family safe by installing fire alarms free of charge. Please see below for details.

A huge thank you to Firefighter Little and the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s Education and Prevention Department.

Parking

We ask that parents again consider their parking choices. Local residents are complaining of cars being parked across drive ways and preventing access to properties. In the nicer weather, please park and stride to avoid unsuitable parking choices. Thank you for your understanding.
