Welcome to a new year at Mortimer Primary – 31.8.21

31st August 2021Mr Bennett
Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Welcome to a new year at Mortimer Primary – 31.8.21
New Term, New Academic Year 2021-2022

Dear parents/carers,

We hope you have enjoyed the summer break and made the most of your children’s time away from school. School reopens to pupils on Monday 6th September.

The start of term is just around the corner and we have many key points to communicate with you before welcoming your children back to Mortimer Primary School.

Included in this newsletter:

  1. School building work
  2. Access to school
  3. Lunches
  4. School timings

  1. School building work

Improvements and essential maintenance to the school roof began just before closing for the summer. Work was fully on schedule until five active sparrow nests were found. Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, the building work cannot continue until the nests are deemed no longer active. The impact of this delay is detailed below.

  1. Access to school

With work delayed, the school has a large section of fencing to ensure Health & Safety is met.

 smaller.jpg

As you can see, the front of school is affected, but all entrance points are safe and able to be used. The school car park and turning circle will be closed to parents during both morning and afternoon peak times until further notice. The yellow barrier will be closed. We ask that you allow additional time for your journey and park considerately for local residents.

  1. Lunches

The roof area above the school kitchen is affected by the delay. As a result, we will be unable to offer hot lunch options (definitely for the 1st week). The options available on Parent Pay reflect this. We are working hard to secure some hot accompaniments eg roast potatoes etc. Parents are welcome to send packed lunches with their child if they prefer.

Some parents may have already chosen a hot meal option for next week before the current issues. If parents can edit their choices for next week, as no hot options will be available.

Lunch options need to be selected by the Wednesday before the week in question via Parent Pay.

  1. School Timings

With COVID restrictions lifted, we plan to operate our school day as follows.

times.jpg

Reception – Please note the morning timing is slightly different to that presented at the school meetings.

KS1 – Parents will not have access to the yard on a morning as again pupils will be greeted by a staff member at the gate. At the end of the day, we ask that Year 2 parents allow year 1 parents to be near the front of the yard to speed up pick up. Year 2 parents can then move forward to collect.

KS2 – we have staggered upper and lower KS2 leaving times to alleviate congestion.

We hope that this provides the key points to the start of this new school year. We will continue to share updates via email, text, school website and our Facebook page. All queries should be directed to the school office.

Many thanks

Mrs Cunningham – Head Teacher

Here comes the summer… – 23.7.21
Dear parents/carers,

We have reached the end of another year affected by COVID19 and we are sure very few would have predicted that we would still be in this position. There are still many positives to be taken from the year and we must continue to find the good wherever we can.

We have reached the summer holidays and we should be as determined as possible to enjoy them as safely as we can. Spend time with your loved ones and embrace each moment together. Find joy in the little things and smile!

Thank you for your support throughout the year. The Mortimer Family has been needed more than ever.

Enjoy your summer and we will see you in September. To our year 6 leavers, fly high little owls!

Mrs Cunningham

Y4 Ancient Greece Day 2021

20th July 2021A Stelling

What a day Y4 had yesterday to bring their topic on Ancient Greece to an end!

Lessons using the Greek Alphabet and Greek Numbers marked the start of the day. Followed by a history of the Greek Olympics and a little bit of research about the coming Modern Olympics starting this week!

The children enjoyed perfecting the skill of discus throwing, javelin and chariot racing – all with a little modern twist.

After all this hard work it was time for a Greek feast! Many of the children tried lots of different delicacies and couldn’t wait to come back for seconds.

This was an absolutely brilliant day, made even better by the effort of the costumes being worn! Well done to all the mums, dads and grown-ups who helped to robe the children. It really did make the day.

We hope you enjoy the photos.

Y4KA Art Exhibition 2021

19th July 2021A Stelling
Way back in October Y4KA had the privilege to work with a fantastic artist. Jane McCracken enjoys working with different mediums and introduced the children to using coloured pens to create their artwork. After overcoming their initial hesitancy, with a lot of encouragement from Jane, of not being able to rub out mistakes, the children did a fantastic job of creating their works of art.
Jane had teamed up with the Born Free Foundation and the Great North Museum (Hancock) to raise awareness of the real threat a lot of animals around the world have of becoming extinct, by creating an exhibition of children’s artwork.
Schools from across the North East and around the world have taken part and now the exhibition is ready at the museum to be viewed.
Excitement does not fully describe how our children were feeling last week when they finally got the chance to not only meet Jane in person for the first time, the art class had been done via zoom, but to see their own piece of artwork on the walls at the Hancock.
The exhibition is open to be viewed across the summer holidays and it would be fabulous for as many of our families as possible could visit the museum to view it.

Step 4 Information

Step 4 Information – 16.7.21
Our response to the removal of restrictions and the impact on the final week of term.

The government have identified Monday 19th July as the date to remove many restrictions that have been imposed on the UK population.

Our aim is to make things as easy and as safe as we can prior to the school summer holidays. We have consulted with the Local Authority over the forthcoming changes and the impact on our school for the final week of term. Please see the attached official letter from South Tyneside Council. In effect, our procedures will not change for the final week.

Parents should note:

  • Timings for the start and end of school will remain the same.
  • Year groups will still act as bubbles for the final week of term.
  • Isolation requests issued prior to the 19th July will still apply.
  • KS1 parents should still collect their children using the box system.
  • We continue to ask parents to respect each other’s space and wear face masks whilst on site.
  • Staff will continue to social distance within school.

Our aim is to ensure that pupils and staff reach the summer holidays safely.

Plans on how we will reopen in September are well underway and we will communicate these to parents when ready.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
