Reception had some special visitors. The local community police officers came to talk to the children. They told us the types of jobs police officers do and how they help keep us safe. We also talked about how to alert a police officer when we need them. We were so excited when we tried on some of the police uniform. The children answered and asked some great questions!

| Year 2 COVID19 Update – 4.6.21 |
| Apologies for the late communication.
We have been working throughout the last 48 hours to clarify the situation created by South Tyneside Council’s Public Health Team request for PCR tests and the subsequent raised questions. Again we must stress that this is not a direction from the school and we do not require any results from any COVID19 tests at this time. Any questions or concerns regarding the information shared should be directed, via email, to the Public Health Team at [email protected] They have attempted to clarify the following:
Children in Year 2 should return on Tuesday 8th June as originally stated. This has not changed from our original communication. Thank you for your understanding at this difficult time. |

Below is the original update.
Dear Parent/carers,
Your child has recently been asked to self-isolate after a positive case of Covid-19 was identified at Mortimer Primary School.
South Tyneside Council thank you for adhering to this important public health action to prevent transmission both within the school and wider community.
Individuals who have been in contact with someone who’s tested positive can now access a free PCR test at https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.
South Tyneside Council’s Public Health Team and PHE are working to detect further cases of COVID, limit onward spread and reduce the impact it may have on local communities.
There is a change in policy regarding returning to school or work and the Health Protection Agency is now asking that all close contacts get a PCR test near the end of their isolation period despite not showing any symptoms.
South Tyneside Council’s Public Health Team and PHE are now advising that your child takes a PCR test prior to the end of their period of self-isolation.
This additional testing will ensure reductions in any possible transmission within the school and reassure you and your child. If a negative test is recorded, then your child will be able to return to school when their period of self-isolation is complete.
This highly precautionary approach will allow detection of any additional cases within the wider community and reduce possible transmission.
If you have any further queries, please contact your own GP, South Tyneside Public Health or Public Health England. As a school, Mortimer Primary are unable to answer individual queries related to this change.

We would like to share this flyer and dates for the year for a mental health parent/carer support group in South Tyneside!
The sessions are aimed at those parents/carers of children and young people who have experienced difficulties with their mental/emotional health and who may have accessed services either now, or in the past. The last few sessions have went great and have since been adapted and added a few formal sessions giving parents/carers a chance to meet and develop their understanding on some of the services South Tyneside has to offer.

2.MY-CATS
At Mortimer Primary School the mental health and well being of our children is very important and we are working hard to encourage our children to talk about their feelings and ask for help when it is needed.
With this in mind, we are excited and proud to announce that we have been chosen by a team of researchers at the University of Oxford to take part in an EYFS and KS1 research project called MY-CATS (Minimising Young Children’s Anxiety Through Schools).
The MY-CATS team are testing out a new way of identifying and supporting young children who might benefit from help to build confidence and reduce the chance of problems with anxiety, now and in the future.
As this is a research project, 2 classes from each year band will be chosen at random by the University of Oxford and qualifying classes will be notified by email before 3.30pm this Friday.
As the Wellbeing Lead here at Mortimer, I am really looking forward to facilitating this research project and must reiterate that this is an excellent opportunity for our EYFS and KS1 children! I really hope that, if chosen, you will take part in the study as we all, young and old, need to look after our mental health to ensure we have a happy and healthy future .
Thank you
Mrs Peacock

Thank you for your support and understanding during this difficult time. The loss of a pupil is tragic and upsetting. We appreciate the messages that have been sent to staff and the school. As we continue to work through this difficult time and plan how we will remember Robbie-Dean, we would like to share these pictures and words from our nursery team.
As part of your child’s Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education programme, Year 5 all received First Aid training from Tumbles and Grumbles. The children thoroughly enjoyed their respective training sessions and learned basic first aid, how to conduct CPR, develop an understanding of using a defibrillator and who to contact in an emergency.

Some children in Reception were lucky enough to be chosen to visit the Urban Factory. We were so excited as this was our first school trip! We took part in lots of gymnastic activities and our teachers were so amazed at how much confidence we demonstrated.
