STEM Week 2020 – Showcase

6th March 2020A Stelling

We brought our STEM week to a close with a fantastic whole school showcase of all the work that has been going on in and around school this week.

Our children have thoroughly enjoyed this creative week and it was evident from their explanations during the assembly how much knowledge they have gained from this week.

Year 5 STEM Week 2020: Merry-go-rounds

6th March 2020A Stelling

Year 5 have worked in groups this week to make carousels! They designed their merry-go-rounds then made the circuit that would make it move. They used a range of equipment such as hacksaws, vices and secateurs to make the frame. Finally, they personalised their carousels with their own designs. The finished products are fantastic and all fit the brief of moving in a circular motion. Some groups experimented further with changing the speed and direction. Well done!

STEM Week 2020

5th March 2020A Stelling

Our STEM Week kicked off with a bang!

Doctor Sarah-Jane from the Royal Institution delivered two fantastic Explosive Food shows to KS1 and KS2. This involved exploding jelly babies to show how much energy is in food, finding out how important your nose is for taste and doing a fire breathing demonstration! She also gave CPD to staff and delivered a community evening show for parents and pupils. This included some of her food demonstrations, as well as an exciting electricity exhibition.
Thank you to Stuart Culley, from Costain, who delivered an assembly to KS2 children about his work on Testos Roundabout and gave them an insight into civil engineering. Thanks also to Chris Grey, from AECOM, who came in to talk to Y5 and 6 children about his job role and the various career paths that are available to them. They were also introduced to an exciting competition led by Primary Engineers, ‘If you were an engineer, what would you do?’ This is a nationwide competition where the winning design will actually be made by real-life engineers!
All year groups are completing STEM projects in their individual classes. These will be shared on the website soon so stay posted!

Week 2 of Science Club

2nd March 2020A Stelling
Week 2 of Science Club and also STEM week in school.
This week the Year 2 group discussed what plants need in order to grow. The children’s existing knowledge was fantastic and we learned some new vocabulary such as germinate.
Each child then planted their own seeds to take home and grow. Some of the children have peas to grow and some opted for carrots.
Let’s see how they all get on.

STEM Ambassadors

27th February 2020A Stelling

This week we had a visit from Evie and Beth who are students at Newcastle University. Evie is currently studying Maths and Beth studies Civil Engineering. The pair delivered an assembly to all of our KS2 children which focused on how the world began and its development through time. The assembly included lots of exciting experiments which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Year 6 then had individual sessions with the ambassadors and their session was about evolution. The children thought carefully about how birds are adapted to different environments then they made a bird of their own to live in either the Arctic, the rainforest or a meadow.

All children had a great time and we would like to thank Newcastle University for providing us with such an enriching experience.

Science Club

25th February 2020A Stelling

Science Club got off to to bang today or should we say cluck!

The young scientists discussed sound and how sound is made through vibrations. We then put this theory to the test making our very own Clucking Chickens. The children were enthusiastic throughout and worked hard to make their chickens which we are sure parents and carers will enjoy at home!

The children are looking forward to next week’s session.
