Y5: News Report Day

27th February 2019A Stelling

Five Year 5 children were given an exciting opportunity to take part in a workshop at The Word which was a follow up of the Match Day Experience from the South Shields vs Bamber Bridge football game. They watched highlights from the match, practised using their word processing skills to write it up then filmed their report! Children read from autocues while standing in front of green screens to give the impression of real match commentary. They were then shown how footage can be edited with music and special effects. What a great experience!

Y4 Viking Day 2019

27th February 2019A Stelling

Year 4 had a fantastic day learning all about Viking life to enhance their history topic. They dressed as fierce Vikings, sampled the food that they would have eaten and made butter and clay pots. They also got to hold real (but blunt) weapons, wrote in runes and tried Viking weaving. What a fantastic day!

Y6 Science Buddies Heart Workshop

15th February 2019A Stelling

All Y6 children had their science topic brought to life when the award winning ‘Science Buddies’ visited to help enrich their science topic.

They have been learning this term about the role of the heart and other organs in the body and also how to keep themselves healthy. They discussed healthy diets, food choices and also had the opportunity to see and touch a real lamb’s heart and see the various areas with ‘hands on experience’.

The children quoted this experience as being:

“Brilliant!”

“Can’t believe you could see the chambers, the arteries and the veins.”

“It made all the previous work suddenly feel real, it’s ok watching videos and looking at books but this was real!”

“That has really made me think about how important it is to look after my heart!”

Hoops 4 Health Basketball Competition

23rd January 2019A Stelling
The South Tyneside Hoops 4 Health Basketball Competition finals took place on Friday 18th January. Eight of our children with their families braved the cold and travelled after school to the Newcastle Eagles arena for a very exciting event.
The semi-finals took place before the Eagles played against Manchester Giants, Mortimer were drawn against East Boldon and at full time the score was nil:nil. A nail biting decider then took place with three children from each team having a shot at the basket. Only one went in and it was Mortimer that scored.
During half time, Mortimer played in the finals against Holy Trinity. Unfortunately the opposition proved too strong for us. Our children thoroughly deserved their second place and were excellent ambassadors for the school.

House Swimming

23rd January 2019A Stelling
The first of our House Competitions took place on Tuesday 22nd January. Our school has four houses: Armstrong, Kirkpatrick, Readhead and Wouldhave who compete in several sports over the year. The event is held at Haven point and always proves popular with the children involved. Only five points separated Kirkpatrick, Wouldhave and Readhead but Armstrong had a clear lead and were worthy winners.
