Williby Roc’s came into school to give assemblies about Eco Bricks, which are plastic bottles filled, tightly packed with non-recyclable plastics. Children were educated about the huge worldwide problem of plastic pollution and shown how Eco Bricks can provide a way of reducing this. The school will be sending out a letter to parents over the next few days explaining how we’re going to get involved in this fantastic project.
Over 160 of our children will be taking part in the Big Garden Bird Watch this weekend. Details of what to do are below:
1) Choose an hour during 26th-28th January. Watch the birds in your garden or local park for one hour.
2) Only count the birds that land in your garden or park, not those flying over.
3) The same birds may land more than once. To avoid counting them twice, record the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time – not the total number you count over the hour.
4) Tell us what you saw – even if it was nothing!
5) Send your completed tally sheet into your child’s class teacher so that the results for the school can be collated and sent to the RSPB. Please do not submit your results on an individual basis to the RSPB as we are registered as a school.
Further guidance and information can be found on rspb.org.uk/birdwatch
If sheets can be returned to school during the week of 28th January we would be most grateful.
Happy twitching!!
Mortimer entered three teams in this event on Friday 11th January. This competition saw 36 teams across the authority entering this hugely popular tournament. Even though the standard was high, two of our teams made it through to the quarter finals. Mortimer A played Mortimer B with the A team just winning. This win guarantees the children a place at the finals which will be played at the Eagles Community Arena on January 18th.
On Tuesday 7th January as part of the programme we are participating in with the Newcastle Eagles, our Year 5 children were joined by members of the team. The professional players delivered a roadshow within the school aimed at teaching the value of a healthy lifestyle incorporating short seminars, practical sessions and fun games. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day with these ‘giants’ of their game.
The junior children acted as ‘detectives’ to guess the jobs of several professionals who came in to school. The visitors (a nurse, doctor, electrician and firefighter) then gave overviews of their jobs. They told the children that they can do anything they put their minds to as long as they work hard and try their best! A very inspiring assembly!
New research into screen time has just been published – but parents are still confused about how much is ‘too much’.
Parent Zone have published these really simple guidelines to help support parents.
Y6 have been learning all about festivals in different religions and decided to make a reverse advent calendar, where they donated rather than received to a local charity.
Thank you to all children who contributed, donations were collected this morning to be used at the Key Project in South Tyneside.
We had to say a sad farewell to Mr Seagrove today, who has been head teacher at Mortimer Primary School for 18 years. He will be greatly missed by all.
We held a special whole school assembly this morning to wish him luck in his next chapter.
Here are a few pictures from the assembly and the children in classes this morning.
