Be Internet Legends Day 2023

27th November 2023Miss A Marshall

To raise awareness of online safety, our school will be partaking in ‘Be Internet Legends Day’ on Tuesday 28th November.

As our children engage more and more with the internet for educational purposes, entertainment and socialising with friends, their exposure to various online risks increases. At Mortimer Primary School, nurturing a culture of online safety is of utmost importance to ensure our pupils’ wellbeing.

To further promote this culture, we are also encouraging families to take part in raising awareness by watching the following video.

Robinwood Update

23rd November 2023Mr Bennett
mps letter headed paper2 (2).jpg
Dear parents/carers,

Thank you to everyone who has completed the Google form regarding the Year 6 Robinwood opportunity in July.

We now have over 35 expressions of interest so we are confident that the trip will go ahead.

The original price quoted included a 10% discount from the venue. I have since spoken again to Robinwood and have negotiated a 20% discount, therefore the overall price will be cheaper than the £285 originally quoted.

If you can let us know either way (by noon Friday 24th Nov), we would be very grateful.

Complete the form here https://forms.gle/ZUesLzwLCqJXRDau9

Yours sincerely

Mr Bennett – Head Teacher

Urgent Thurston Update 20/11/23

20th November 2023Mr Bennett
mps letter headed paper2 (2).jpg

Dear parents/carers,

I am desperately sad to be informing you of this. The Thurston centre boiler has broken down and can not be fixed.

The children are therefore being sent home at 12 noon Tuesday 20/11/23. We expect them back at school 3:30pm tomorrow. Please can you ensure someone is at school to collect your child.

I know you will be saddened by this latest issue as we are. I can only apologise, but know that there is no decision that the school could have made to change this outcome. This trip has already been moved once and we do know that currently, Thurston has no additional weeks available across the rest of the year to reschedule again.

I have not been able to speak to the Thurston leaders yet to fully understand the issues faced, but all children are safe and have took part in some activities today. Mrs Stelling is informing the pupils of the news tonight after a walk.

I will personally try and find some form of alternative trip for later in the year and I will begin contacting other outdoor education providers immediately. Whilst I can not promise anything yet, I will try my very best.

We will provide more information as soon as we have it.

Yours sincerely

Mr Bennett

Year 1 Church Visit

16th October 2023Mr Bennett

Dear parents/carers,

My apologies as communication regarding the Year 1 visit to St Peter’s church has fallen short of our expected standards. Systems have not worked as expected and we are working to improve this ASAP.

We want to take all children to visit St Peter’s church to support their work in RE. They look at the features of the church internal and external.

Children will walk to the church and it will have no implications on lunch times or the end of the school day.

We would be delighted if you could provide parental consent via the Parent Pay website.

School uniform to be worn.

1RF – Tuesday 17th October 1 – 2pm

1LN – Wednesday 18th October 1 – 2pm

1JD Wednesday 18th October 1:30 – 2:30pm

Yours sincerely

Mr Bennett

High 5 Netball Friendly

7th July 2023Miss A Marshall

Our dedicated High 5 Netball team took part in an organised friendly against Whitburn Primary School. Our team was divided into three squads where they demonstrated fantastic skills and sportsmanship throughout the match. All children thoroughly enjoyed the friendly, and a huge well done to one of our Mortimer squads for winning all of their matches!

May Sporting Update

18th May 2023A Stelling
Mortimer Sport Round-up
It has been a very busy half term and it isn’t over yet! We are proud members of the South Tyneside School Network and enjoy participating as a school in the wide range of sporting opportunities they can offer to our pupils.
British Gymnastic Acrobatic Success!

Three of our Year 6 pupils have recently competed in the British Gymnastic Acrobatic finals and came away champion with two silver medals and a bronze. We are very proud of them all as these medals show not only their skill but also their dedication and hard work they put into their sport.

Children’s Cancer Run 40th Anniversary Run

Well done to three of our Year 6 girls, who took part in last weekend’s Children’s Cancer Run. We are sure a number of our other pupils also took part and would love them to share their medals too! A great achievement for an even greater cause.

Watch out in September when we will do a focus on all our young runners taking part in this years Great North Run. We recognise this is a huge event that many pupils take part in every year and we would love to celebrate their success!

Boys’ Football League

Huge well done to our two mixed football teams this season. Our Thursday night league team finished 4th in their league and our Monday night team have finished top of the Coyne League winners and have now qualified for the Champions League event later this month. We wish them every success in their final competition of the season.

Girls’ Football League

Well done to all our girls who competed on behalf of Mortimer this season. They had three really tough days of tournaments and finished respectively 4th and 7th in the league.

We will be looking for our new teams later in the summer term, ready for an early Autumn start. Dates of trials will be announced to year four and five girls in due course so they are prepared for a quick start to the Y5/6 league 2023/24. We are also hoping to add to our morning football skills club with the addition of a girls only club in September.

Year 2 and Year 3 Cricket Update

Big thanks to Durham Cricket Club and South Shields Cricket Club for their support this half term. Children in years two and three have received expert tuition and enjoyed tournaments as a special treat to end the term.

We look forward to next term when Years 5 and 6 will be taking part in an inter-school tournament and hopefully we can take part in a range of competitions from South Tyneside Sports Network.

There is big enthusiasm for cricket at Mortimer Primary School and the excitement from pupils and staff is certainly visible!  We are entered to compete in inter school competitions throughout the summer term with years 3-6.

Another big thank you to South Shields Cricket Club, who provided a free club for Y2 and Y3 girls earlier this term.

Girls’ Cricketing Success: Well done Halle!

Well done to Halle in Year 6, who has successfully trialed and is now playing for Durham Girls’ Cricket team.

This is going to be Halle’s 3rd season playing for South Shields Cricket club. She currently plays for the U11s in the girls league and U12s and U13s in the boys league. She was nominated by the coaches of South Shields Cricket Club last season to attend the Durham Pathways winter training programme. From here she has earned a place in the  Girls Elite County Squad for 2023.
She has been a real inspiration to some of our younger girls and has supported South Shields Cricket Club providing free coaching for 16 of our year 2 and year 3 girls over a 5 week period. These girls will then be offered places on the all star programme at South Shields where Halle will assist other coaches and continue to work with them.
Halle is also a player on both our mixed and girls’ cricket teams this year. Her dream is for a professional career in cricket one day and she sure does show the commitment, drive and effort to achieving her dreams. Well done and good luck!
Year 4 Tennis Competition

Some of our Year 4 children stepped up to a new challenge and competed in a tennis competition with 5 other schools at Boldon Lawn Tennis Club.

We were very proud of the eight children who competed, this was something new for them all and they had great fun trying a new sport.

Mixed Cricket Tournament

An amazing day for our Mixed Cricket Team on their first day of competition. Five games and five very convincing wins; these pupils now progress to South Tynside finals after half term.

Watch for future updates about our Girls’ cricket team and our future competitions with years 3 and 4!

The cricket season has certainly started!

Wanderers Cross Country Event

Four of our Y5/6 children took part in a cross country running event at Temple Park at the start of this term. This was a great event ran by South Tyneside Schools. All four boys gave it their all on quite a tricky course.

SSOC Young Leaders Day

Our Young Sport Leaders were invited to take part in a training day at the North Marine Park. They faced a number of challenges and had to answer questions and solve problems as they travelled around the park.

Our SSOC Leaders help to promote sport and activity across the school. This term they are completing tasks to promote 60 minutes of activity a day and supporting the planning of sports days and inter house tournaments.

Mortimer Sports Round-up

20th March 2023A Stelling
Mortimer Sport Round-up
Only three weeks into the half term and we have had a very busy start.
Y6 Hockey Tournament
Mr. Douglas took a number of our Y6 children to participate in the South Tyneside Schools’ Hockey tournament. This was a very new experience for our pupils as it was the first time they had been given the opportunity to play with wooden sticks as opposed to our usual uni-hockey equipment. Our team quickly adapted and put up a brave fight playing many matches over the afternoon. They finished a strong second in their league but sadly failed to qualify for the next stage of the competition. On a very cold afternoon, our pupils didn’t stop smiling! Well done to them all. Brilliant attitude to a new sport from all which resulted in a brilliant afternoon.
Boys’ Football League

This week saw the return of the boys’ football league after their winter break. Our Coyne League Team (Monday night squad) played two matches and came away victorious with 3-0 and 5-2 wins.

Sadly due to weather, the children who play in the Snowball League were postponed until this next week.

Amazing work team!

International Women’s Day – FA Girls’ in football

Mortimer Primary proudly joined girls around the country to encourage young female footballers to follow their goals.

Some of our Y6 girls, who play for our football team, joined Mrs. Stelling and a number of Year 2 girls for a fun ‘ kick around’.

They played a number of football skill games, chatted about why they love the game and talked about how other sports such as dancing and gymnastics can improve our football skills.

The Y2 girls all wanted the session to last a little longer and asked if they could do it again soon.

Big thank you to our Y6 girls for inspiring our future lionesses.

Reception Multi Skills

Miss Bay’s class took part in the South Tyneside School’s multi-skills sports event at Temple Park. We have heard that all children and staff had a fantastic time and were able to experience lots of new sports and activities. Well done RKB!

(Photos will be shared through Tapestry.)

Our Y5/6 Swim Team

Eight pupils represented our school at the South of Tyne Swimming finals next week. They sure made a big splash when they finished 4th out of 14 schools on the day.

They took  home a wide variety of medals: –

Gold – boys’ backstroke

Silver – girls’ and boys’ freestyle

Bronze -girls’ freestyle, girls’ freestyle relay, boys’ freestyle relay and bronze in the cannon race where the whole team competed together.

Not only were their swimming skills amazing but their attitude and enthusiasm to the event made the staff present very proud. Great sportsmanship was shared between the team and towards the other competitors. Well done!

Gymnastic National Final Qualifiers!

We are so proud of three of our Year 6 children, who train with South Tyneside Gymnastic Center. Last weekend all three qualified to represent the North East of England in national finals for acro gymnastics, which will be held in Stoke-on-Trent in May.

We wish them every success in their next stage of this competition!

Year 4 Indoor Athletics Festival

4VB enjoyed trying a variety of new sports and skills at the South Tyneside Schools Indoor Athletics Festival. The children all tried hard throwing javelins, jumping over very high hurdles, relay races and much more.

Well done 4VB!

RMP – 23.12.22
Dear parents/carers,
From January, Mrs Peacock will step away from her role as classroom teacher with RMP. Mrs Peacock will be taking up the position of acting Deputy Head Teacher in school.
From January 2023, children in RMP will be taught by Miss Dowse. Mrs Peacock will still be a presence within Reception throughout the year.
Miss Dowse is excited to join the Mortimer team and to teach the children. I’m sure they will enjoy being in her lessons. As she is new to the school, we will organise an opportunity for parents to meet Miss Dowse early in the term. We will send details of this event to you in the first week back in January.
Thank you for your continuing support and have a very merry Christmas.
