Year 2 Science Club

By A Stelling14th December 2017
Some of our Year 2 children have enjoyed a fantastic six week programme of exciting science activities. All of the children worked extremely hard and have broadened their scientific knowledge by fully participating each week. Making bouncy balls, growing a crocodile, mixing colours, diving sultanas and laughing chickens are just some of the activities the club engaged in. A great time was had by all involved.

Art and Design Competition

By A Stelling8th December 2017

As some of you may remember, Mrs Lawrenson set a competition for Years 5 and 6 to design a canvas bag which represents our school.  The winner of the competition was a child in Miss Fenwick’s class.

These bags will only be available for KS2 to buy as KS1 have book bags. The bags will be able to be stored in the children’s trays which will help to tidy up the cloakrooms.  A sample of the bag is shown below.

The bags are £4.50 each and if you wish to order one, any orders would need to be sent back to Mrs Lawrenson before 20th December.

First Lego League Presentation Winners!

By A Stelling8th December 2017

A huge congratulations to our Y5/6 lego club who took part in the Regional Finals of the First Lego League hosted by ICT in Schools at The Word held at South Shields Museum.

This was a very tough competition consisting of many elements including programing a robot to complete tricky challenges on an obstacle board, a technical round to explain coding of the robot, an unseen team work round and a presentation about a project that they have researched and developed a solution to. Many of the elements of the competition scoring are based around fundamentals of communication and team work.

We can proudly say that our team brought home a trophy for best presentation, they had researched a problem and came up with a solution to help reduce water wastage from taps.

The competition on the day was fierce with our children competing not only against primary school children but also secondary schools.

It was a fully packed day but they still managed to sneak in time for an ice-cream as a reward for their hard work and a look around the museum.

As always, we were very proud of our children, their behaviour, attitude and team work skills were all commented on by other schools and a team of judges; they were excellent ambassadors for our school. Well done Mortimer Master Builders!

All of our school football teams played in their respective leagues recently. The B Team and Girl’s teams both played during week commencing 6th November. Both teams represented their school to the best of their ability.

The boys A Team played week commencing 13th November. They continue an excellent run beating Cleadon 4-1 and in a nail biting finish equalising with Ashley in the final seconds of the game for a 1-1 draw.

Y5 visit to Nissan

By A Stelling14th November 2017
Last week, a group of year 5 children attended a code club event at Nissan. They learnt how code is used in the plant and had the opportunity to try basic coding using Scratch software. They used Crumble Bot robots to mimic how parts are carried around the warehouse. They even had a robot race! A great day was had by all.
