Having been crowned South Tyneside champions our A team travelled to the county finals on Wednesday 20th June. Our boys played some excellent cricket and managed to reach the semi finals. Well done boys!
Champion of Champion’s League
Our football A team having won their league played other ‘champion’ teams at the Academy of Light on 26th June. The boys played brilliantly and finished in third place.
Girls’ Football
The final fixture of the Girls’ League took place in Mariner’s Park. Both our A and B team girls were victorious in their respective leagues. Mr Maltby was delighted with their performance.
KS2 Sports Day 28th June
The children had a fabulous morning of Sports Day fun. The sack race an old traditional favourite made a welcome return this year. We will have to wait a couple of weeks before the Sports Day trophy is presented to the winning house. The end of event races were extremely close. Congratulations to the winning athletes.

South Tyneside Libraries: Summer Reading Challenge 2018

2nd July 2018A Stelling

Get ready for a summer of treasure-seeking fun with the Mischief Makers!

For this year’s Summer Reading Challenge we’re off to Beanotown, where rumour has it there’s a treasure chest full of epic pranks waiting to be discovered. Say hello to Pieface, Rubi, JJ, Gnasher, and the ultimate mischief maker: Dennis!

They’re on the trail of the hidden treasure, and they’re looking for some more friends to join in the adventure!

Sign up at your local library from Saturday 14 July and read six library books of your choice to complete the challenge and see if you can help the Mischief Makers find the box of tricks. It’s completely FREE to take part!

All children who sign up will be given a map of Beanotown to keep a record of their journey as well as receive a certificate and medal when they have completed the challenge.

Dennis and his friends will be with you every step of the way to give you clues and show you how to be a Mischief Maker too!

About the Summer Reading Challenge

First Lego League – Aqua Adventure

28th June 2018A Stelling

Congratulations to our you KS1 Lego Team who took part in the First Lego League Aqua Adventure Competition held at The Word this week. They proudly took home the prize for ‘Inquisitive Minds’ due to the research that they conducted for their project.

A huge thank you to our Y5/6 Lego Team who mentored and led the younger children through the project. They had to create a ‘tell me poster’, a lego creation using LEGO Wedo and present their model to a team of judges.

Great work and dedication from all children!

Year 4 Tennis

26th June 2018A Stelling

Year 4 attended a tennis competition last week. Two teams were entered. The B team were joint winners of their group so to determine a winner, individual points scored in each match had to be counted. Unfortunately they were beaten by only one point by Jarrow Cross who went on to play our A team who also won their group. The A team played brilliantly and won overall. This means they will represent South Shields in a county final which is due to be played next week in Sunderland. A superb performance by both teams.

STEM assemblies provided by Newcastle University

25th June 2018A Stelling

Big thank you to Dr Fleet and Dr Hall from Newcastle University who came to deliver two assemblies to our KS1 and KS2 children today.

The theme of the assemblies was to highlight the diverse work of engineers in the ‘real world’, the work of females within science and engineering and to talk about the work of universities.

*STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics within education.

Y6 Beamish Visit

25th June 2018A Stelling

Y6 had a fantastic day on Friday when they visited Beamish Outdoor Museum as part of their topic on World War Two. They had the chance to experience what it would be like to be an evacuee placed on a farm during that time; baking cookies with ration supplies, preparing houses for blackouts, practicing home guard skills and sampling the cramped conditions of an Anderson Shelter, it certainly brought the topic to life.

Y3 – Green screen technology and video editing

14th June 2018A Stelling

Y3EM had a brilliant afternoon mastering the skills of green screen technology and video editing. The children were quick to pick up skills using a green screen app called Stikbot; they planned a story board of sequences for a longer adventure then joined and edited their videos using I-Movie. The finished products had titles, captions, audio and transitions. Top work for children so young.

The children were amazing and showed true digital leader qualities… who knows we may have future top animators in the making and their journey began at Mortimer Primary School!

This is part of our whole school STEM program, preparing our children for jobs fit for the future.

Girls’ Cricket Success!

13th June 2018A Stelling

A group of 19 Year 5 and 6  girls took part in the ‘South Tyneside Kwick Cricket Tournament’ at Whitburn Cricket Club on Wednesday 7th June.

The girls formed 2 teams. The B team did very well against strong opposition and ahda  mixture of results as result of good bowling and fielding.

The A team had great success winning all 4 of their games in their league, some more comfortably than others.

This secured the A team a place in the final against St Oswald’s Primary School. Another successful win meant that Mortimer A team came out overall winners from the 18 teams taking part and will now go on to compete at the ‘County Games’ representing South Tyneside.

An excellent day’s cricket was had by all!

We wish the nine girls from the A team every success in their forthcoming county competition later this month.

Y6 Outdoor Adventure Activities

11th June 2018A Stelling

On Friday, thirty children from Year Six visited Marine Park for an Outdoor Adventure Festival. The children took part in orienteering activities, as well as team building and problem solving. The children had to work together to solve a range of mental and physical challenges: they were by no means easy but everyone showed tremendous effort and teamworking skills. There were lots of other schools from across the borough involved and fantastic time was had by all.
